Discover Lake Maggiore and its valleys by train and boat. From the shores of the lake travel to the Centovalli and Vigezzo Valley, also called the Painters Valley, on the Lago Maggiore Express, a combination of train and ferryboat that will allow you to discover spectacular landscapes and unique views. Along a circular route, which can also be reversed, you can take a ferry boat from Stresa, Baveno or Verbania to the Swiss city of Locarno and then return by the scenic train that runs through the Centovalli and the Vigezzo Valley to Domodossola where you catch a return train back to your place of departure on the lake.
Mottarone cable car
From the Lido di Stresa, a 20-minute cable car ride will take you to the summit of Mottarone, 1,500 meters above sea level. From here admire one of the most beautiful landscapes in Italy. On a clear day you can see 7 lakes, the Alps, magnificent Monte Rosa and the plains of Lombardy. Getting off at the intermediate station, visit the Alpinia Botanical Garden with its spectacular views across the Borromeo Gulf.
Orta’s tourist train
To facilitate getting down to Orta’s pedestrian-only historical town center, a sightseeing train connects the coach parking area to the docks on the central square where speedboats and ferries depart for the island of San Giulio. The train also takes passengers up to the Sacro Monte di Orta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Tourist train from Stresa
From the center of Stresa a train connects the main ferry landing and car park to Villa Pallavicini, a renowned estate with a beautiful gardens and a zoological park. It also offers a 20-minute sightseeing tour of the town of Stresa.
